Breakfast sets up your energy, hunger, and blood sugar levels for the rest of the morning. What you eat first thing has a real downstream effect on how you feel, how focused you are, and how satisfied you stay before lunch.
Ultra-processed breakfast foods tend to be energy-dense but low in fibre, with high amounts of added sugar, salt, and refined carbohydrates. These can cause a rapid spike in blood sugar followed by a crash, leaving you hungry again within a couple of hours, even if you ate a large portion.In contrast, natural breakfast options built around whole ingredients e.g., wholegrain oats, nuts, seeds, and fruit, digest more slowly, provide sustained energy, and tend to be far richer in fibre, vitamins, and minerals.
Studies have found that adults in the UK get, on average, 54%* of their daily calories from ultra-processed foods, with breakfast cereals frequently cited as one of the biggest contributors.
The evidence against a diet high in UPFs has grown substantially over the past few years. A 2024 review of 45 meta-analyses, covering nearly 10 million study participants, found convincing evidence that diets high in ultra-processed foods are associated with significantly increased risks of cardiovascular disease and anxiety. The review was covered by Stanford Medicine.
Separately, research published in the journal Nature Medicine in 2025 compared participants on a minimally processed diet against those eating processed foods meeting UK nutritional guidelines and found that the minimally processed group lost more body fat, experienced fewer cravings, and showed markers associated with better heart health.
It's worth noting that not all ultra-processed foods carry the same level of risk; the NOVA classification is broad, and context matters. But the breakfast aisle is a particularly important space to scrutinise, because many products marketed as 'healthy' are, by NOVA criteria, ultra-processed.
